SCH 3U - Solutions & Solubility

Four units down and one to go...

There are several definitions that are important to understanding the concepts in this unit.  Be sure to include them in your summary notes.

Homework:
Read Section 8.1 and make notes.
Do Practice Problems, p. 358 # 1-5, 10, 14

Answers:

1a.  water with table salt and sugar dissolved in it

1b.  the solvent is the one substance that does the dissolving of one or more solutes

2.  all these substances have a solvent and one or more solutes dissolved in the solvent to make the solutions;  In each case, the resulting mixture is homogeneous

3.  no, the solutes must dissolve to produce a homogeneous solution - we should not "see" any solutes separate from the solution

4.  solvent - does the dissolving; solute - gets dissolved

5.  insoluble - a solute that does not dissolve in solution; unsaturated - a solution that does not have the maximum amount of solute dissolved in it

10.  temperature drop or pressure increase

14.  there is more solute dissolved in solution than there would be normally - this is unstable because the solute is just looking for an excuse to fall out of solution
