SCH 3U - Bonding Review

Success Criteria:

  • be able to correctly complete all of the requirements of the chart below (ΔEng and PBT, LDD, VSEPR diagram, VSEPR name, molecular dipole)
  • know the bond angles for the VSEPR diagrams
  • be able to explain why a molecule is polar or not

Review:

Create a table, with the following headings:

  • Molecule
  • ΔEneg & Predicted Bond Type
  • Lewis Diagram
  • VSEPR Diagram
  • VSEPR Name
  • Molecular Dipole

Complete the table for at least ten of the following molecules (you must include the ones with an asterisk (*)):

  • nitrogen trichloride
  • phosphorus (III) iodide
  • aluminum fluoride
  • arsenic (III) chloride
  • carbon tetrachloride
  • oxygen difluoride
  • nitrate ion
  • phosphorus (V) chloride
  • silicon (IV) bromide
  • selenium hexafluoride*
  • oxygen dichloride
  • tin (II) bromide
  • cesium bromide
  • boron trichloride
  • nitrogen (III) fluoride
  • sulfur dichloride
  • magnesium chloride
  • hydrogen cyanide*
  • barium sulfate*
